The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature

Florida's Gulf Coast natural history museum, with a 50-foot dome planetarium and a manatee rehabilitation habitat.

The Bishop is the largest natural history museum on Florida's Gulf Coast, telling the region's story from the Ice Age to today. It was called the South Florida Museum until it was renamed in 2019.

The Bishop Planetarium is a 50-foot full-dome theater. The Parker Manatee Rehabilitation Habitat, a 60,000-gallon pool with above- and below-water views, cares for rescued manatees before they're released.

Tips

  • The museum is closed Mondays; check the site for current hours and planetarium showtimes.
  • It's at the west end of the Riverwalk, so a walk along the river afterwards is easy.

Good to know

Is Snooty the manatee still there?

No. Snooty, the museum's famous manatee, died in 2017; the habitat now cares for rescued manatees before release.
